For me, there's first the story, or a character. Or rather, a concept of the character, if I draw him or her the first time. I usually don't know how I want them to look, I rather focus on what they are, how they view their world and fit into it, what do they think of themselves. This is the base, from which the image then forms. And by no means is this any conscious effort. Rather, a gut feeling. I am a schemer and planner to the worst degree, but still I cannot draw someone angry unless I feel his or her anger too. I cannot just decideon it. And although I don't strive for ultrarealism in style, I'll try to attempt that in content. Anatomy of clothing and armour is as important as any body proportions, they should look like that they can be used. That they fit their user, enchance their personality, make sense. They, like their wearer, should possess history. Oh, I must admit that I'll usually go over the edge with this. For example, when I make a decoration for someone's gown, I may wonder who, when and how did it, and how did the person feel doing it. But then, that's me... And even realism can be broken down, if the image requires it. If there's calling for it, if the image looks better with skewed perspective or unnatural proportions, I'll say the hell with it. As long as the internal consistency within the world of the image remains, bending the rules is no sin. On the contrary, most of the times it's called for. Oh, it's good to be back! And thank ______________ (fill-in-the-blank) Elfwood's back too! Yes, I've actually managed to do something, new pics here! A couple of commissions for the first issue of Unspoken Word, a magazine featuring Glorantha of Hero Wars (formerly RuneQuest, if anybody remembers.). And the second issue is already underway, so at least somebody is whipping me onward, if I can't do it. Also, a couple of new character sketches. Thanks everybody for your visits. Even though if I don't have the time to visit you, I very much like to hear from you...

| 26 Mar 2004 | Scacha | You are so inspiring! First I just love your realistic and good drawn style. Second, I just love the contents of your pics. You play with clichés ironically and you also draw normal people (Well, ok, people in a phantasy world are not really normal, but you don't only draw superheroes, sexy women, elves and so on). One of the best galleries here! Very funny and interesting ideas (hey, I wanted to draw a sauna first... ;-). I am looking forward to the next pics! | |
